2018 Elizabeth Yates Award Winner: Clara Brogan

The Concord Public Library Foundation is pleased to announce that Clara Brogan, retired music teacher and current volunteer storyteller for the Christa McAuliffe Elementary School, has been chosen to receive this year’s Elizabeth Yates Award. The award is given annually by the Concord Public Library Foundation to honor those who inspire young children to read.

Clara Brogan was a former Julliard student, piano teacher and music teacher for the Concord and Merrimack Valley school districts. Her retirement in 1985 led her to discover the joy of children’s storytelling and she has been a 27 year volunteer storyteller at Kimball School, Beaver Meadow School, Walker School, and most recently, the Christa McAuliffe School. At the age of 94, she continues to read to 2nd grade students every other Thursday morning, where she has become known for her “strength, energy and willingness to find new stories for the students, relevant to their lives and to make a difference.” Brogan has an expressive and engaging manner that captures the students attention as they “listen to her every word, action and expression.” She cares deeply about connecting to children through her storytelling and continues to inspire and share the joy of literature through her volunteerism.

The Elizabeth Yates Award honors Concord resident and children’s author Elizabeth Yates, who was a strong advocate of reading and who supported library programs in the Concord community during her lifetime. Elizabeth Yates received the first award named in her honor in 1994. The winner of the award is given the opportunity to recommend $500 worth of books to add to the Children’s Room collection at the Concord Public Library, each book bearing a bookplate with her name. In addition, her name is inscribed on the Elizabeth Yates Award plaque that hangs in the Children’s Room.

We are pleased to honor Clara Brogan at this year’s Yates Reception to be held on Saturday, May 5th at 2 pm in the Children’s Room of the Concord Public Library. Family, friends, colleagues, former colleagues, students and former students of Clara Brogan are invited to attend.
